‘Black Panther’ Wins Three Academy Awards

Marvel Studios’ groundbreaking film Black Panther has added three Oscars® to its already impressive list of accolades. Black Panther’s costume design, production design and original score were recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which also honored Pixar Animation Studios’ Bao as best Short Film (Animated).

Black Panther’s costume designer, Ruth Carter, and production designer, Hannah Beachler, made history at the 91st Oscars, becoming the first African American women to win in their respective categories.

“Marvel may have created the first black Super Hero, but through costume design we turned him into an African king,” said Carter, as she accepted the Academy Award® for best Costume Design.

“It’s been my life’s honor to create costumes,” she added. “Thank you to the Academy. Thank you for honoring African royalty and the empowered way women can look and lead on screen.”

Beachler, who accepted the award for best Production Design alongside set decorator Jay Hart, expressed her gratitude to Black Panther director Ryan Coogler, “who offered me a different perspective of life, who offered me a safe space, who’s patient and gave me air, humanity, and brotherhood.” Beachler shared that she also gained strength from Marvel Studios—“who gave me the opportunity to do my best, who supported the vision of this film, and lifted us up every day”—as well as from the film’s cast and crew, and her family.

“I give this strength to all of those who come next, to keep going, to never give up,” said Beachler. “And when you think it’s impossible, just remember to say this piece of advice that I got from a very wise woman: I did my best and my best is good enough.”

Black Panther composer Ludwig Göransson recalled sitting in Coogler’s dorm room years ago, preparing to write the score for the director’s very first short. “And we’re here 12 years later, celebrating one of the most important cinematic moments in history,” he shared.

The film’s three Oscars cap a memorable awards season for Black Panther, which was also nominated for Best Picture and counts among its many honors a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture and a Grammy® Award for Göransson’s score. The film was also an American Film Institute (AFI) Movie of the Year and featured in the National Board of Review’s Top Films of 2018.

Bao’s director, Domee Shi, began her animation career as an intern at Pixar in 2011 and made her directing debut with the short that opened ahead of Incredibles 2 in 2018. Accepting the Oscar® with the film’s producer, Becky Neiman-Cobb, Shi sought to inspire young female artists who may follow in her footsteps. “To all of the nerdy girls out there who hide behind their sketchbooks, don’t be afraid to tell your stories to the world,” Shi emphasized. “They’re going to freak people out, but you’ll probably connect with them, too, and that’s an amazing feeling to have.”

Four Marvel Animated Shows Coming to Hulu

Four Marvel Television animated series are coming to Hulu based on Marvel characters M.O.D.O.K., Hit-Monkey, Tigra, Dazzler, and Howard the Duck, all leading into a special animated event!

Hulu announced the news today at the Television Critics Association press tour that four new Marvel Television animated series are on the way, including “Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K.,” “Marvel’s Hit Monkey,” “Marvel’s Tigra & Dazzler Show,” and “Marvel’s Howard the Duck.” The series will all lead into a special animated event for Hulu, “Marvel’s The Offenders.”

In “Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K.,” M.O.D.O.K, an egomaniacal Super Villain with a really big head and a really little body, struggles to maintain control of his evil organization and his demanding family. “Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K.” comes from writers Jordan Blum and Patton Oswalt, with Blum, Oswalt and Jeph Loeb serving as Executive Producers.

“Marvel’s Hit Monkey” tells the tale of a wronged Japanese snow monkey, mentored by the ghost of an American assassin, as he cuts a wide swath through the Tokyo underworld in this darkly cinematic and brutally funny revenge saga. “Marvel’s Hit Monkey” comes from writers Josh Gordon and Will Speck, with Gordon, Speck and Jeph Loeb serving as Executive Producers.

In “Marvel’s Tigra & Dazzler Show,” two woke Super Heroes and best friends, Tigra and Dazzler, fight for recognition among powered people who make up the eight million stories in Los Angeles. “Marvel’s Tigra & Dazzler Show” comes from writers Erica Rivinoja and Chelsea Handler, with Rivinoja, Handler, and Jeph Loeb serving as Executive Producers.

Trapped in a world he never made, America’s favorite fighting fowl Howard the Duck hopes to return home with the help of his unstoppable gal pal Beverly before the evil Dr. Bong can turn him the crispiest dish on the menu, in “Marvel’s Howard the Duck.” “Marvel’s Howard the Duck” comes from writersKevin Smith and Dave Willis, with Smith, Willis, and Jeph Loeb serving as Executive Producers.

Finally, nobody asked them to, and we’d be better off if they didn’t, but M.O.D.O.K., Dazzler, Tigra, Hit Monkey and Howard the Duck are all forced to team up in order to save the world and certain parts of the Universe in “Marvel’s The Offenders.” Jeph Loeb serves as Executive Producer, while writers and additional Executive Producers for the project will be announced at a later point. “A giant head. A monkey. A tiger lady and a disco queen. And the duck. Brought together because no one else could but Marvel Television on Hulu. M.O.D.O.K., Hit Monkey, Tigra & Dazzler and Howard the Duck will form a team no one asked for — The Offenders (and wait until you see who the Team Leader is!)!  We have such tremendous talent bringing amazing adult animation that’s fun, fresh and fantastic.  We’re so excited for what’s to come!” exclaimed executive producer Jeph Loeb, Head of Marvel Television.

‘Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger’ Announces 2 Hour Season Premiere

Critically acclaimed series “Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger” is the story of Tandy Bowen (Olivia Holt) and Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph)—two teenagers from very different backgrounds who find themselves burdened and awakened to newly acquired superpowers, which are mysteriously linked to one another. The only constants in their lives are danger and each other. Tandy can emit light daggers and Tyrone has the ability to control the power of darkness. They quickly learn they are better together than apart.

Premiering on THURSDAY, APRIL 4, at 8:00 pm EST/PST with a two-hour episode, season two turns the heat up on our young heroes as Tyrone and Tandy try to find their place as more active heroes in this world. As they learn and grow emotionally, so will their skills. In season one, we saw Tandy and Ty dip their toes into the world of hopes and fears; this season, they will dive deeper into this metaphysical pool. With enhanced powers and a decision to make about the type of heroes they want to be, they make the choice to run into the danger, head first. They tackle a heartless vigilante and uncover an evil that’s been preying on the young women of the city, as the show takes on more serious topics like gang violence and human trafficking.

“Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger” stars Olivia Holt, Aubrey Joseph, Emma
Lahana, Gloria Reuben, Andrea Roth and J.D. Evermore. The series is executive produced by showrunner Joe Pokaski (“Underground,” “Marvel’s Daredevil”) and Marvel’s Head of Television Jeph Loeb (Marvel’s The Punisher,” “Marvel’s Jessica Jones”). It is co-produced by Marvel Television and ABC Signature Studios.
